On September 3, 2014 at approximately 7:12 p.m., the Butte County Sheriff’s Office received the report of a vehicle fire on Oroville-Quincy Highway, two miles east of Mountain House.
CALFIRE / Butte County Fire was the first agency to respond. Once on scene CALFIRE / Butte County Fire reported to the Butte County Sheriff’s Office that they had located a deceased person within the burned vehicle.
Detectives from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and began investigating the suspicious death. Detectives discovered that the victim, as well as the vehicle, were severely burned. Through the course of the investigation it was determined that the incident was, in fact, a homicide.
Through use of DNA analysis, detectives were able to positively identify the decedent as Marc Anthony Cyril Thompson, age 25, of Chico CA.
About Marc Thompson
Marc Thompson was a 25 year old, African American college student from the Chico area in Northern CA. Through the investigation, detectives discovered Marc was an avid champion for social change and racial equality. Marc was a member of several multicultural societies in the academic realms of both Butte Community College and the California State University, Chico. Marc was described by his friends, family and classmates as having a “larger than life” personality and a deep desire to help his fellow man. It is for these reasons that Marc’s death came as such a deep blow to his friends, loved ones, and his community at large.
Since Marc’s death, the Butte County Sheriff’s Office has been working tirelessly with the California Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigations to establish, and follow up on, any and all leads in this case.
It is because of the senseless nature of this crime, and the loss of what can only be described as an “up and coming” advocate for change in our community, that the Butte County Sheriff’s Office has established this web site. We are seeking the public’s help in locating and prosecuting the person, or persons, responsible for Marc’s death.
